Kate remembers the “beautiful soul”, David Bowie, in today’s Observer

David Bowie

Kate has written a tribute to David Bowie, along with a host of other notable fans and friends, in today’s edition of The Observer newspaper. Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, Carlos Alomar, Gail Ann Dorsey, Julien Temple, Sadie Coles, Edwyn Collins, Robert Fox, Nicola Tyson also pay tribute in today’s article.

Kate writes:

David Bowie had everything. He was intelligent, imaginative, brave, charismatic, cool, sexy and truly inspirational both visually and musically. He created such staggeringly brilliant work, yes, but so much of it and it was so good. There are great people who make great work but who else has left a mark like his? No one like him.

I’m struck by how the whole country has been flung into mourning and shock. Shock, because someone who had already transcended into immortality could actually die. He was ours. Wonderfully eccentric in a way that only an Englishman could be.

Whatever journey his beautiful soul is now on, I hope he can somehow feel how much we all miss him.

  1. What wonderful words from one amazingly creative soul to another …

  2. Conrad

And guess who’s the only person who doesn’t relate a Bowie story back to themselves. God, our Kate is a class act.

    • Stephi

      So true ?

    • Elizabeth

Indeed Conrad, that’s exactly what I noticed as I read through the copious tributes. It’s why we love her so…

Also, I don’t think that Kate herself realizes her place in the pantheon of singular musical geniuses to whom no one is equal. She’s there, whether she realizes it or not!

Thank you Kate! Beautiful words for David.

  5. Tina Copp

One deep and creative artist talking beautifully of another. I was fond of both of you in the 80s and remain a fan. Great to see Kate B in London last year but sadly never got to see Dave B ?

So glad i was a teenager in the 70s no one has any impact like those icons..music seems so safe now

  7. Words of truth by the only other artist with the talent to say something new in composing , singin’ and expressing herself both in Music and Visual performances, the amazing Kate Bush. You both studied with Lindsay Kemp…You and David Bowie should have collaborate… what astounding performances you could have done together! Now David Starman returned to The Stars .

I don’t mind that all the other tributes in the Observer were based on personal memories of the man. I do mind that Chris Stein recalls him as being catty about something and jealous of attention given to someone else’s hair. The quote from Stein is the definition of catty, especially since Deborah Harry credits Bowie with taking them to an International Stage and since this is regarding a man who’s just died. Perhaps they knew Bowie well enough to recall him as being a fallible human, but egads… take the temperature of the room. I would have loved to hear, actually, Kate’s personal memories of him (other than the first meeting which she described in the 2007 Mojo tribute). But her words here were well-chosen and sublime.

Might be a longstanding feud there, Robb; I seem to recall Iggy saying that he and Bowie ‘hit on Debbie’ all the time – but she kept blowing them off by saying “maybe if it doesn’t work out with Chris”. But tell me, who is the person who hair to compare with the Duke’s?

  9. Daniel Bengtsson

Wonderful words! I grew up with the music of David Bowie and Kate Bush. 20 years ago, January 1996, I went to a concert with David Bowie in Stockholm. Still I have not seen Kate Bush performing live, but I hope to do some time.

  10. Elizabeth

As ever, our Kate eloquently translates into words how many of us are still feeling. I wonder what song she would pick to cover, if asked to participate in a tribute. I’d love to hear her take on “Life on Mars”.

And David, you DID blow our minds, in the best way possible. Enjoy the heavens, the most original Starman of all.

  11. Tracy Allen

    Beautiful words Kate B

  12. nonny lawrence

Beautiful tribute from another beautiful soul.

  13. Nathan

Lovely words, speaking for us all. Bowie is gone but his music lives forever. KB, how about releasing the DVD of ‘ Before the Dawn’? Millions are waiting, and could really do with a pick me up.

  14. Davie

Wonderfully and beautifully said Kate x

  15. giulio

    Now you’re a star, David.
I’ve always believed Kate should have duetted with him on ‘Wild Man’.

  16. Andrew

so profoundly written and deserved.. Kate is magical and her words for David should resonate throughout the world of music.
