Front Row again…

With all the excitement about Kate’s beautiful song for the soundtrack to The Golden Compass, I thought it’d be nice for people to re-listen to the wonderful interview Kate did for the BBC’sFront Row programme two years ago. In it Kate discusses what motivates her musically, her creative process particularly in relation to the Aerial album, and her views on the current preoccupation with ‘celebrity’. It’s a lovely chat with Kate and is happily still available to listen to here. Very nice.

Lyra radio premiere!

Kate’s new song for The Golden Compass soundtrack, ‘Lyra’, has received it’s UK radio premiere on the BBC Radio 6 programme Roundtable, hosted by Steve Lamacq, at 6pm GMT this evening. First impressions: It’s a beautiful track, and perfect for the end of this film, I’ve just finished reading the book and this exactly sums up where audience’s hearts should be as they think about Lyra’s story. A very loving sentiment towards this character driven by such a gorgeous vocal. As I said, perfect – cannot wait to hear this in the cinema – this song really does have a context yet to come…for the record Steve Lamacq actually called the song Kate’s “new single” but it may just be a promo single for radio airplay purposes, we’ll have to wait and see. The show is now archived on the BBC ‘Listen Again’ service, here. ‘Lyra’ is played at 44 mins 20 seconds into this audio stream.

Kate Sends A ‘Baaaad’ Radio Message to Mark Radcliffe!

Kate has sent a very amusing ‘good luck’ comment to Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2 (his show is moving to a new 8pm timeslot) – it was played on Thursday April 5th and you can download the MP3 of the clip here (thanks to Looking At Blue on the forum) or listen to the BBC Radio player archive of the show here (the message from Kate starts 31 minutes into the show).

King Of The Mountain – Weekend news round-up

RADIO: King Of The Mountain has received numerous plays on BBC Radio 2 and, as hoped, even Radio 1 in the UK. Ken Bruce, who as we know got the world exclusive first play, told listeners that he knows that they will love it and that the song grows and grows on you after a few listens. Jonathan Ross said “That’s great! – it really grows on you!” on his morning show on the 22nd. Steve Wright said: “Kate Bush never ever disappoints. I’ve heard that 3 times lnow and I just love it. I’m not saying that just coz I’m trying to get her on the programme”. On the evening of the 21st the song was played on Radio 4’s Kaleidoscope programme – Neil McCormick, a reviewer from the Daily Telegraph, was underwhelmed by the single saying that it was an odd record, a poor single choice and that “it would need to be pop symphony in 3 octaves to please fans.” He did praise Kate’s voice however saying that she’d “obviously looked after it”. On the 22nd Rob Da Bank on Radio 1 ran a Listener’s Choice text poll between the latest releases from Kate and Paul MCartney, Kate won and it got its Radio 1 airplay debut – with a lot of positive feedback from listeners (listen here – about one hour into the show). The single has also been played on Radio 2 by Johnnie Walker, Sarah Kennedy, Janice Long and of course Mark Radcliffe – all gushing about how much they like it. Listeners have been posting their reviews on the BBC Radio 2 message board here.

The new single appeared on BBC Radio 6’s venerable review programme Roundtable with David Quantick giving it a 9 out of 10, a member of the public on the phone giving it a 7, but two other reviewers weren’t Kate fans at all so they gave it a 4 and a 3! (to be fair they only seemed to know about Wuthering Heights era Kate). Quantick is the presenter of the Radio 2 Blagger’s Guide programme which featured an hilarious (and highly complimentary) parody of Kate’s career. We particularly enjoyed hearing a young Kate being scolded by her headmistress, and an older Kate accepting an award by sending her speech via enchanted bluebird!.

PRESS: The Manchester Evening News has given the single 4 out of 5 stars. Mark Richardson writes: “After a 12-year absence Kate Bush is set to return to the airwaves with a new album, Ariel – and the first single will not disappoint her many fans. In these days of X Factor and Pop Idol it is almost a surprise to hear an artist construct a sound that is casually littered with musical ability. Ever since her breathe-taking debut release Wuthering Heights, Kate Bush has consistently brought a fresh approach to her music, blending styles and technology to produce a unique sound. Her latest single King Of The Mountain makes it clear that she has lost none of this ability. While King Of The Mountain is not ground breaking, it does offer all the dynamics that are integral to the Kate Bush sound, from unstructured electronics, to driving rhythm and soaring vocals. Welcome back, Kate.” Marc Lee in The Daily Telegraph also praises the track: “King of the Mountain had its first public airing yesterday on Radio 2…the song is vintage Bush, the operatic swoops and ethereal, vaguely troubled ambience as haunting as ever. Opening with a gently hypnotic rhythm track, chugging guitars, and blurry vocals, the song builds to a big, rocking finish, as Bush wonders at “the wind whistling through the house”. After more than a decade, what is striking is how little has changed in the Bush soundworld. She could almost be back on the storm-lashed moors pining for Heathcliff.” Stephen McKenna write’s for ICScotland: “It sounds really fresh. Opening with some delightful percussive synth noises, Kate’s idiosyncratic voice comes through and the whole track feels very atmospheric and nonchalant. The song still has the inimitable Kate Bush sound about it but is a little more modern than material from her 1993 album The Red Shoes.”

In the US, of huge significance considering its enormous readership is the feature in the brand new Entertainment Weekly (Sept. 30). It has listed Aerial at Number 3 in its 20 “Albums We’re Most Looking Forward To This Fall” The blurb says: “The bewitching British chanteuse returns from the world’s longest maternity leave with her first album in 12 years. A leadoff single – the beautifully whoosy “King of the Mountain” debuts online Sept. 27, but the main event will be a two-CD concept album that promises to be her most ambitious yet. Move over, Tori Amos – the real fairy queen is back to reclaim her throne.” The Globe & Mail in Canada lists King Of The Mountain in its Essential Tracks column. Carl Wilson writes: “This first single in 12 years from the vanishing white witch of British art rock finds her elemental atmospherics intact, plus a reggae-accented marimba beat and teasing references to those other elusive artistic spirits, Elvis and Citizen Kane.” The UK gay publication The Pink Paper has ran an article celebrating Kate’s “gay cult” – see scan here. And finally, Elvis Presley fan sites are buzzing with the news that King Of The Mountain refers to Elvis: “The new Kate Bush song “King of the Mountain” is about the legendary Elvis Presley! It is quite a hypnotic song with a driving musical beat which is sure to cause quite a commotion, and likely to become a major hit for the singer. Kate is one of the most original artists in the popular music world. Her very unusual songs are both imaginative and poetic. Her return to the charts will be welcomed by discerning listeners everywhere. Elvis fans will be delighted.” See www.elvisnews.com and http://www.elvisinfonet.com/. BBC Radio 2 Launches Campaign For Kate To Appear on Air

BBC Radio 2 - The Mark Radcliffe ShowBBC Radio 2 DJ, Mark Radcliffe, has been making constant Kate references ever since somebody picked her record for the Crucial Three feature on his show last week. Mark is a huge KB fan and today will be day 5 on his show’s “Bushometer” (showing how many days he’s been waiting to get a reply). Apparently he desperately wants Kate to be on his show, he’d even be happy with a phone call. One of our site visitors, Louise, has had an email about Kate read out on air, other fans have been posting on his site’s guestbook and listener’s have been phoning in their Kate-related anecdotes. Currently the show’s website is running a poll (right) as to why Kate mightn’t be replying! You can hear the archives of his show on the site also – he usually updates listeners on the Bush-o-meter in the first 5 minutes of his shows. (thanks to Louise Carrington)

Julia Fordham & Erasure Play Kate on Radio 2

ErasureJulia Fordham - Concrete Love CDBen on the guestbook lets us know that on Friday 10th January singer Julia Fordham chose Wuthering Heights on BBC Radio 2’s “Tracks Of My Years”. Her comments were as follows: “I remember seeing her on TV and I was really seduced by her. She is so individual, unique and original. And she has this strength and beauty and vulnerability. She’s a lovely artist and a big influence on me and I am really looking forward to her new record.” She’s currently promoting her Concrete Love album.

And, on Wednesday 15th January Andy Bell from Erasure chose Kate’s Army Dreamers on the same show. He said that he and Vince had once visited Kate’s house and asked her to produce their Wild album but unfortunately she was too busy. He also said that she makes fantastic music and that there is just so much on each of her albums. He concluded by saying that “Army Dreamers and Breathing are two of the greatest anti-war songs ever”. According to the Erasure website, they recorded a version of Running Up That Hill for their forthcoming album Other Peoples Songs, but it did not make the final cut. Possible future b-side? (Thanks to Ben)

Kate at #11 in BBC All Time Number Ones Poll

50 Years Of The UK Singles ChartKate has been very highly placed in the BBC Radio 2 poll of it’s listeners top 100 favourite number one singles. The poll marks the 50th anniversary of the UK charts. Wuthering Heights was placed at number 11, the highest placing by a female artist. The chart was broadcast on Saturday. Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” topped the chart. The result has gotten a splash of media coverage, mostly due to the lack of newer acts, such as The Guradian newspaper here, also one of many reports here, and the main BBC Radio 2 site here.  BBC DJ Simon Mayo can be seen talking about why he chose Kate on this video clip here. (thanks to Michael Leitz and Greg Gilligan)

Kate requested by the stars…

Over the past few weeks music artists have been choosing Kate’s tracks as favourites on BBC Radio 2. Ben on the guestbook writes: “When Beth Orton chose The Man With The Child In His Eyes on yesterday’s Radio 2 show (Oct 10th) she said “this song kills me. It’s a classic and it’s from my fave Kate Bush album The Kick Inside. The song is full of hope – that there is the right man out there”. Also Steve Balsamo picked This Woman’s Work, Rhianna chose Wuthering Heights and Brian Kennedy selected Running Up That Hill, all on Radio 2’s Ken Bruce Show. On another show, latin pop singer Shakira chose Wuthering Heights, John on the guestbook says that she said “that her sister used to play it to her all the time when she was a lass”. Sarah Kennedy included Wuthering Heights in her “Songs we either love or hate” feature, listeners vote in for song that irritates them the most. Sarah did say at the end that she liked the song.. To top it all off Dale Winton played the live version of L’Amour Looks Something Like You on his BBC show.

Steve Harley On BBC Radio 2: “Kate’s Recording As We Speak”

Steve HarleyOn his weekly BBC Radio 2 show “Sounds Of The Seventies” last week, Steve Harley played Wow by Kate, introducing the song with “there are even those who dont go too big on Kate Bush, I pity them”. After the song he casually mentioned: “I saw Kate Bush a few weeks ago, and I am pleased to say she is recording as we speak. My drummer Stuart Elliot is playing on the album and says she is bang on form”.  You may still be able to catch a recording of the show at his website here. (thanks to Linda on the guestbook.) Here’s this entry on Steve from the excellent Gaffaweb dictionary: “Leader of the group Cockney Rebel, in a less well known credit Harley also provided vocals for the first version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical The Phantom Of The Opera. Having donated half of Cockney Rebel to the recording of the album The Kick Inside, Harley further gave of himself on 12 May 1979 by appearing at a benefit concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in memory of the late Bill Duffield, with whom Harley had worked in the past.”
