The Sensual Walk – 18th June 2011 – Howth / Dublin City

Off Howth Head and into the flesh...

Once again this event aims to celebrate the work of Kate Bush and James Joyce with an afternoon meet-up at the summit of Howth Head for some music, peaches and seed-cake, followed by a leisurely cliff-walk down into the village of Howth for refreshments. The evening part of the event will be held in Odessa in Dublin City Centre, where the music and craic will continue till late.

This event is an excuse for fans of Kate Bush, James Joyce or otherwise to celebrate Bloomsday with a stroll in one of Dublin’s most spectacular landscapes. It will be the fourth time it has taken place and it is inspired by the song ‘The Sensual World’ by Kate Bush in which the character of Molly Bloom from Joyce’s Ulysses is brought to life by Kate. In 2011, remarkably, Kate releases a new version of her 1989 recording, now re-named ‘Flower of the Mountain’, in which she will use the actual words from Joyce’s Ulysses for the first time – the Joyce estate have finally granted her permission. It adds a nice extra layer of significance to our day. In previous events we have featured many incredible Irish and international musicians, along with unique Joyce recitations from Kate’s brother John.

BBC Radio Bristol chat to Dave and Seán about Kate!

Well, the excitement generated by yesterday’s truly special John Wilson interview with Kate (longer version here) has continued today with BBC Radio Bristol devoting a sizeable portion of their Afternoon Show with Anna King to Kate. As well as replaying parts of the Front Row interview, Anna chatted live to Dave Cross (of HomeGround Magazine) and to myself! If you want to hear what we had to say, the programme is now archived by the BBC here. (our bits are between 25mins 30secs and 35mins 30secs into the stream).

HomeGround’s Dave Cross writes a piece on Kate for Boyz Magazine!

Here’s a bit of an exclusive for you all. Dave Cross (yup, that guy who you see in the ‘About Us’ pics) has put together this nice feature on Kate and the new album for the UK gay magazine Boyz which is out tomorrow. You get to read it here first! Also find the bigger version of Paul Bowen’s accompanying illustration here.

Director’s Cut: a much-needed re-cap!

Director's Cut - Kate Bush - 2011

Here at katebushnews.com the excitement is palpable. Ever since we first noticed some mysterious changes to Kate’s official site on the afternoon of the 11th of March it’s been non-stop. We’ve had the album announcement, the first clip of Deeper Understanding and brilliant new images of Kate, the single premiere on April 4th, some first looks at the fascinating album packages, a brace of early enthusiastic album reviews (including my own) the momentous video premiere which had everybody talking (not least a spooky floating pair of lips!) and quite a few more interviews than maybe might have been expected, including the must-have MOJO cover feature which is in the shops now. Thanks for all the support and feedback, we’ve never experienced this volume of visitors before, which makes it all the more exciting. And here was me thinking Noel Fielding prancing about in a a red dress for Comic Relief was going to be the news highlight of the year! (It was pretty phenomenal though, Noel). So, here’s our attempt to quickly summarise what’s going to happen next, to the best of our current knowledge. Coming up:

  • Tomorrow evening, Wednesday May 4th, at 7.15pm UK time, John Wilson interviews Kate at her home for the BBC Radio 4 Front Row programme.
  • Then, this coming Friday 6th May, Sinead Gleeson’s interview with Kate in The Irish Times is published.
  • Monday 9th May sees Kate chatting to Ken Bruce on his BBC Radio 2 show from 9.30am.
  • Friday 13th May sees Director’s Cut released in Ireland and some other European territories (this follows a similar Friday release pattern in those places for Aerial in 2005)
  • Monday 16th May is the official UK release date of Director’s Cut on Kate’s new Fish People label in conjunction with EMI. Kate has stated that she considers this to be her ninth studio album. The album is released on CD, 3-disc Collector’s edition, double vinyl and download on iTunes with what is promising to be a beautifully presented package. We. Cannot. Wait.
  • This same date, Monday 16th May, also sees the re-release on Kate’s Fish People label of The Dreaming, Hounds of Love, The Sensual World and The Red Shoes on CD after a considerable absence from many shop shelves. (We’ve also seen an Aerial re-release listed but we need to confirm that one). We definitely know that The Red Shoes will be a new re-mastered version (as included with the 3-disc edition of Director’s Cut.)
  • Tuesday 17th May sees the first portion of Mark Radcliffe’s chat with Kate air on BBC Radio 2 at 11pm.
  • Monday 23rd May – Friday 27th May is “Kate Bush Week” on the BBC 6Music radio station. A radio documentary on Kate will air on the night of Monday May 23rd. Each day of this week from 2.30pm to 3pm 6Music will play a section of Mark Radcliffe’s interview with Kate along with songs from Director’s Cut.

Director’s Cut – Seán’s first impressions…

Seán says: I was kindly invited by EMI Ireland to a playback of Director’s Cut in Dublin during the week. I know that the reviews of this album are going to be coming thick and fast soon, and so with that in mind I didn’t want to spoil things too much by posting a blow-by-blow review of the album on the main news page. Suffice to say I was thrilled by what I heard. This is a gorgeously rich musical experience that I can’t wait to spend a LOT of time with when it’s finally released next month. I have instead posted some of my initial impressions on a separate page here if you want to read them, but I know many of you are just holding out till May 16th so that you can enjoy your own experience with this new record.

Kate signs limited edition Aerial ‘Soundwaves’ art prints (exclusive site discount)

Tim Wakefield - Soundwaves print of the Kate Bush song Aerial - signed by the artist and Kate Bush

Tim Wakefield – Soundwaves print of the Kate Bush song Aerial – signed by the artist and Kate Bush

Kate has chosen the title song from the Aerial album to be interpreted by UK artist Tim Wakefield in one of his highly collectible “Soundwaves” artworks. The resulting prints, described as stunning artworks created from digital images formed in the recording process,  sample a section of the song. Wakefield listens to the music, the lyrics and the tempo of the song to decide what colours and shapes he’s looking for before presenting them to the music artist. He has devised a technique to enlarge and customise these images, transforming them into lar

Dimensions: Print Size 660mm X 660mm Medium: Archival Digital Print On Paper Limited Edition: 50 Worldwide (Please note: the actual prints do not feature the ‘Soundwaves’ watermark as seen above)

The prints are available to purchase from St Pauls Gallery here. The gallery is exclusively offering our site visitors a 10% discount. The discount code is WTOYT154 (case sensitive). Interested buyers can put this code in the ‘get discount’ box then press ‘recalculate’ at check out. This will apply the katebushnews.com discount.

There is a limited run of 50 ‘Aerial’ prints worldwide, each one hand-signed by Kate and Tim Wakefield, and individually hand-numbered. They are sold in co-operation with the Nordoff Robbins charity, which brings music’s transforming power to children and adults in need, through the delivery of music therapy services, music and health projects and community music projects, as well as education programmes and research. Other artists who have taken part in the Soundwaves charity project include Sir Paul McCartney, George Michael, Pink Floyd, The Bee Gees, The Killers, Tina Turner and Kings Of Leon. Recently, all four members of Abba signed Soundwaves prints based on their music.

New album rumours (remember those?)

Perez Hilton reports new album rumourQuite a lot of people have been coming across an online rumour that Kate will be releasing a new album this year. As far as I can make out, the rumour stems from the Wotyougot blog website here, who claim to have heard the news from “a reliable source”. Their story was then picked up by Digital Spy here and others soon latched on including celebrity blogger Perez Hilton here.

Meanwhile Graeme Thomson, author of Under the Ivy: The Life & Music of Kate Bush, has posted a quote on his blog that is apparently from someone at EMI commenting on the rumour: “Right to be cautious. These rumours always surface this time of year and there’s no reason to think this is any different. We’re hopeful that a new record may emerge this year, but I was saying the same to people in Jan of 2010 so who knows… only Kate herself. Let’s keep fingers crossed!! I’m feeling optimistic.”

So there you go, who knows indeed? Rumours of Kate releasing an album are nothing new, and this one has legs, so it’s worth pointing out that until something is mentioned through official channels we wouldn’t go planning an album launch party just yet. Here at katebushnews we’ll only report something along these lines when we absolutely feel there’s substance to it, or it comes from Kate herself. If there is something coming in 2011, we’ll be all over it!

Merry Christmas!

Wishing all our site visitors a wonderful Christmas and a fantastic new year! Thanks for all the support in 2010, it means everything. Special thanks to Mike Wade for his tireless work on the forum, to Brian Cloughley for his beautiful site design work, to Del Palmer for all his encouragement this year, and, of course, to Kate for the music.

As the holiday season approaches, we’re thinking especially of Rachel Anne Lisi, our online friend, who passed away on November 10th. Her death at such a young age sent shockwaves through the Kate Bush fan community, and her brilliance, talent, passion and warmth will never be forgotten.  Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

Brian Bath page added

Here’s a chance to catch up on the music of another legend heavily associated with Kate…we’ve added a Brian Bath page to the features section here. Del Palmer has popped by to leave a comment about his friend there too. I’ll always remember Brian’s trippy cartoons from the early KBC newsletters, fans of those drawings will love the look of his Myspace page, link to that in our new page also. Check it out.

Kate Bush Club magazines now online…and more

Kate Bush Club magazines

A new site, kbarchives.org has been put together which aims to compliment the information already available on the brilliant Gaffaweb site with newly gathered material. One resource offered are full scans of every single edition of the (now seemingly defunct) Kate Bush Club newsletter. These carefully-produced magazines were a means for Kate, Del, Paddy, John and many others close to Kate’s work to keep fans posted on what was going on. Big thanks are due to the lovely Lisa Bradley for all her hard work on running Kate’s official fan club and producing these wonderful magazines.

Another site to check out is Sozo’s Japanese translation of katebushnews.com – an incredible labour of love, he’s been quietly providing this service for Japanese-speaking fans for many years now. All the more impressive considering he has managed to mimic the new site format successfully! See it here.

Welcome to the new site!

Kate

Hello! We’ve been busy making the site more user-friendly and hopefully you’ll find it useful. All the news and content from the old version of the site is here, now fully searchable and archived! At last. You’ll see that Homeground and its editors will now be taking a much more active role in their online home, and will be posting news and other items along with me, as well as updating the Homeground sections as the publication of the Homeground book draws closer. Peter & Krys are moving away from admin and moderation of the forum to concentrate on everything else here, but Mike Wade and Seán will continue to help out with the busy site forum.

What else is new? Well, you’ll start to notice a lot more social network integration throughout the site. You can comment on certain posts if you want (we’ll trial that for a while, see how it goes). There’s a simple but brilliant new video gallery that brings a lot of Youtube videos together in one place. There’s features on Kate-related artists and a new Gig calendar we’ll be updating to let you know where events are happening. Basically the new site gives us endless new ways to bring you all the Kate Bush news and information you need! Thanks for all the support! Seán, Peter, Krys & Dave
