All the audio has been remastered by Kate and James Guthrie except for Before The Dawn on CD which is the original mastering.
Update: Seán discusses the remasters in the Kate Bush Fan Podcast – listen here:
Update: 5th October – Kate has posted on her official site about the reaction to the news:
Response to the Remasters…
I just can’t believe the fantastic response to yesterday’s announcement of the Remastered project. I’m totally blown away! It’s really exciting and incredibly rewarding for everyone involved to see it being received so positively.
I really wasn’t expecting such an overwhelming reaction. Thank you.
All best wishes,
Kate

Thanks to the Kate Bush Encyclopedia page for letting us know that Geoff Emerick, who was engineer on one of Kate’s earliest recording sessions in 1975 (The Saxophone Song, The Man With The Child In His Eyes, and the never released track known as “Maybe” or “Humming”) has passed away yesterday. RIP Geoff, our condolences to his family and friends. Geoff was best known for his work on classic album recordings by The Beatles.
Geoff Emerick was the first engineer I ever worked with. He recorded The Man With The Child in His Eyes along with a couple of other tracks at Air Studios in Oxford St in 1974. He was incredibly sweet and supportive – I’d never been in a recording studio before, let alone played live with an orchestra. He joked around with me and put me at ease. He had a brilliant sense of humour and was really quite mischievous. I’ll always remember him with a smile on his face. What a really lovely man he was, an incredibly gifted engineer and one of the truly great heroes of the music business. It was such an honour to work with him. Kate
Last month, the exact location of the first incarnation of Kate’s Wuthering Heights video (the “red dress” version) was unearthed by fans – see our news report here. Now, user Kestrel on our site forum has made contact with the cameraman from that day, Mike Miles. We finally learned the date of the famous shoot (Wednesday 26th of October 1977) and received a very detailed report on what happened – which you can read below. Thanks to Kestrel for sharing!
Kate Bush … ‘Wuthering Heights Promo’ … Salisbury Plain… Wednesday 26th October 1977
From around 1976 to 1982 I worked as a freelance Lighting Cameraman, for Nick Abson’s company, ‘Rockflicks’, making pop promo and concert films with Nick . All the productions we made were shot on 16mm film. (no ‘videos’ in those days). From 3rd October to 5th November 1977, I was working with Nick on the first Stiff Records UK tour .. ‘The Live Stiffs Tour’… featuring Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric and Larry Wallis. We were making a Feature length ‘fly on the wall’ film of the tour… ’If It Ain’t Stiff ..It Ain’t Worth a F…’ We travelled around the UK with the band on their coach, driven of course, by Trevor. I won’t elaborate on the antics that we all got up to during the tour, some of which are in the film. Other than to say, that it was the film crew who were thrown out of the infamous Watford Gap ‘Blue Boar’ motorway service station on the M1, for bad behaviour.
During the tour’s progress to the West and Wales we had a free day. To fill the gap, Nick had arranged to shoot a promo while we were travelling to the next Stiff gig. The promo was for an unknown singer called Kate Bush. The track was called ‘Wuthering Heights’. I remember hearing the track for the first time and thinking Kate was a bit squeaky! Because we had to shoot on the way West (the next gig may have been Cardiff, but not sure), Nick had found a grass field with a stand of trees in the middle of Salisbury Plain, which was convenient for continuing our journey after we had finished.
The night before, we stayed in a hotel in Salisbury, where we met Kate Bush and all had dinner together. I also discovered she grew up in Welling, Kent, which was only about 2 miles from where I grew up. It was probably quite daunting for young Kate, her first promo and in a strange hotel surrounded by an admiring bunch of blokes. She sensibly went to bed early and declined our request for her to join us for a drink in the bar.
Early the next morning we met up with a Grips who had driven down from London in an old white van, carrying an Elemack Spyder Dolly and a whole load of curved track. Once we found the location we had to get the van into the field. It was Autumn and had been raining. The entrance was very muddy, the van was very heavy. After a number of attempts to drive into the field, the van became completely stuck in the mud. We couldn’t unload it and carry the dolly to the location, it was too far and weighed half a ton. The only solution was to find a local farmer with a tractor and get the van towed out of the mud and down to the location. About 2 or 3 hours later, we had found a friendly farmer with a tractor. It was a dull grey morning and the field, although covered in grass, appeared as though it had once been ploughed. It was very uneven and also on a slope. We set up the track in a large semi-circle, checked that it was level, which was quite a feat and placed the dolly and camera in position. The sound play-back equipment, for the recording Kate would mime to, was all set up and tested. We were sort of ready to go.
I couldn’t really do much to enhance the look of the film. I did use a soft, light, diffusion filter, but had to be careful because of possible flaring from the sky. I couldn’t put graduated filters on the lens to control the sky, which was dull, but brighter than everything else, because of the trees and the fairly continuous tracking and camera framing. I didn’t have a light powerful enough to light Kate’s face from a distance and there was no sun to reflect light into her eyes. I did manage to use a hand held reflector for some of the close-ups. We also had a small smoke machine. Unfortunately it was quite windy, so the smoke blew quickly past Kate’s face. While we were assembling all the equipment, Kate had come over to me and said that she had been told that the Cameraman was the person to ask about how she looked! She had lovely long hair and had an artificial flower pinned into it. She asked me if I thought it was a good idea and if it looked all right. At the time it looked pretty good, she also seemed to want to keep it in if she could. I said it looked lovely and should keep it in her hair. Nick couldn’t wait any longer and we went straight into the filming with little rehearsal. We were already running out of time because of the delayed start. We had to get to the Stiff gig later that afternoon.
Once we started filming, Kate soon got into her dance routine and had obviously been working on it for some time. We covered the whole number as many times as possible, tracking back and forth, with occasional stops, filming different frame sizes from very wide to extreme close-up. Kate’s dance moves became pretty energetic. The flower in her hair slowly worked loose and started to flop around a bit. Her hair sometimes became caught up in it. By now it was too late to stop, remove it and start everything all over again. We just didn’t have time. I was feeling bad about my advice regarding the flower. Kate was also becoming tired after all the dancing on a ploughed grassy field. It was getting cold. After numerous takes we had to stop and pack up. Considering the early morning start, the long hold up with the van getting stuck, the difficult terrain for dancing and the dull, cold weather; Kate couldn’t have been more helpful, patient and friendly to everyone. I had got used to her voice and decided I liked it. However I wasn’t so sure if it would be a hit, or if she would become popular. Shows how much I knew. The crew accompanied Kate to Salisbury station and just as she was about to board the train back to London, she gave me a lovely hug and a kiss on the cheek. We were all in love with her by now. We then set off for the rest of the Stiff tour.

Just a tip for you, in case this excellent podcast from Cecilee Linke in the USA has passed you by, I’ve only recently caught it myself! Strange Phenomena – The Music of Kate Bush aims to take every Kate Bush song recorded, in album order, devoting an entire episode to discussing each one in turn and in-depth. An ambitious undertaking to be sure, but Cecilee is already now rounding off her series of episodes on Never For Ever and will surely soon be setting her sights on Sat in Your Lap, The Dreaming and beyond. Chatting with fans and musicians, she leaves no stone unturned as she examines the history of each track, mulls over its meaning, lyrics, musical structure (Cecilee is a musician) and its place in Kate’s oeuvre.
Seán introduces the third outing of the Bush Telegraph specials and has a mini pub quiz about Lionheart (thanks, Simon). Paul and Darrell discuss the ‘fan gene’ and the extremes they went to as young teenagers, investigating future Kate releases and harassing EMI! They also discuss memorable encounters with Kate.

Damon Metrebian, the founder of Super Bear Studios in France, at which Kate recorded the bulk of her album Lionheart, has posted a memory of that time on his Facebook page as well as a page from their studio guestbook signed by Kate and Del in 1978. Super Bear Studios was sadly destroyed in a fire in 1986.
“40 years ago we were deep into the production of LIONHEART, Kate Bush’s second album which featured songs, including “Wow”, “Hammer Horror” and “Oh England My Lionheart”. Kate is (and remains to this day) one of the most authentic and beautiful souls I ever had the privilege to meet.”
Kate said afterwards: “[Recording in France] was an amazing experience. I mean it’s the first time I’ve ever recorded out of the country. And the environment was really quite phenomenal, I mean it was just so beautiful, it was so unlike anything I’d seen for a long while. And I think there was so many advantages to it, but there were a couple of disadvantages – the fact that it was so beautiful, you couldn’t help but keep drifting off to the sun out there, you know, that sort of thing. But you just didn’t feel like you needed a break, because the vibes and the weather and everyone around was just so good, you know, you didn’t feel like you were working. It was really, really fun.” (Lionheart Promo Cassette, EMI Canada, 1978)
ITV Drama’s new six-part adaptation of the classic novel Vanity Fair is notable for featuring contemporary music on the soundtrack. Last Sunday 16th September it was Kate’s 2012 version of Running Up That Hill that was heard playing over the closing scenes.
Based on the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, it stars Olivia Cooke, Claudia Jessie, Michael Palin, Suranne Jones, Martin Clunes, Tom Bateman and Johnny Flynn. Thanks to Sean Quinn for the clip!
Kate is releasing a book of selected lyrics entitled “How To Be Invisible” on December 6th. It is published by Faber and Faber and you can pre-order it here.
Selected and arranged by Kate, with an expansive introduction by the novelist, David Mitchell, How To Be Invisible presents the lyrics of Kate Bush for the first time in a beautiful cloth-bound Faber edition.
“For millions around the world Kate is way more than another singer-songwriter: she is a creator of musical companions that travel with you through life,” said Mitchell. “One paradox about her is that while her lyrics are avowedly idiosyncratic, those same lyrics evoke emotions and sensations that feel universal.”
The Guardian has ran a short piece about her book here and Guardian writers choose their favourite Kate Bush lyrics here. Uncut have the story here.
Ambushed is a new Australian musical brought to you by Adapt Productions as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival on 25th-27th and 29th-30th September. Tickets here.
“Kate Bush sang about it, Emily Bronte wrote about it and a waitress celebrating her 42nd birthday is dreaming about it in this surprising new piece of Australian Musical Theatre.

Kate’s brother Paddy has dropped me a line to let you know about an upcoming concert in Wales. “There’s a Justin Vali concert coming up on the 22nd of this month in Cardiff, I shall be playing with him. It’s for a charity called Money for Madagascar, the concert marks a 200th anniversary…it might be of interest to some of your Welsh members.” Justin, as you will know, played on Kate’s songs The Red Shoes and Eat the Music, along with Paddy.
The show takes place in the Dora Stoutzker Hall at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff on September 22nd at 7.30pm. As well as the Justin Vali Quintet with Paddy Bush, the evening will feature The Nidum Ensemble. Tickets are £17.50 (£15 concessions) and children under 12 are free. More information on the college’s website here.
From the event publicity:
“What are we celebrating? An amazing piece of Welsh history that started in disaster when, in 1818, all but one of the first group of missionaries died of fever within eleven weeks of landing in Madagascar. The survivor, David Jones, went back to Mauritius to recover but later returned to Madagascar. A third young Welshman, David Griffiths, and his wife Mary arrived there in 1820.
What followed was truly astonishing: Mary and the two Davids went up to the capital, learnt Malagasy and started schools, with girls included from the very beginning. By 1824, scarcely three years after their arrival, over 2,000 children were in school and being taught in their own language. The two Davids built a chapel and started preaching in Malagasy. With the help of their most able pupils they then set about translating the Bible and the first complete edition was published in 1835.
At the request of King Radama and using the Roman script, they created a written form of the Malagasy language which is almost perfectly phonetic. As a result, learning to read has been a relatively painless process for generations of Malagasy children ever since. Music reaches every part of life in Madagascar and when King George IV sent King Radama the gift of a piano he was overjoyed. Some of the music composed by him in the 1820s will be performed in the concert.
The Nidum Ensemble
Paddy Bush is Irish, not Malagasy, but he is a fine performer on the Valiha, the national instrument of Madagascar, and will be joining Justin Vali and his group for the concert. Welcome Paddy! We are delighted to have you. The Nidum Ensemble is made up of brilliant young Welsh musicians from big UK orchestras. They are well-known in South Wales where they have given many memorable concerts.
There will be crafts from Madagascar on sale in the foyer and also a showing of a short film about the first missionaries before the concert and during the interval.”
Seán introduces another Bush Telegraph special episode – Paul and Darrell, chatting across thousands of miles, discuss Kate’s second album, Lionheart, the singles Hammer Horror and Wow, Kate’s continuing fame and success at that time, and generally how much the album means to them, almost 40 years later. Seán tops and tails the episode with bits of news!

Some ingenious fans on our site forum have meticulously researched, using mapping software and guesswork, the exact location of Kate’s 1978 red dress video for Wuthering Heights! While the studio “white dress” version of the promotional video is more widely known, the red dress video has now become iconic AND the go-to template for choreographed re-enactments of Kate’s dance moves ever since – as seen in “Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever” reports on this site!
Initially thought to have been filmed in Surrey, or even Germany or Holland, the breakthrough came when a fan contacted the director of the clip, Nick Abson, who revealed: “It was the artillery range at Salisbury Plain. We couldn’t do better as we only had the morning due to filming “If it Ain’t Stiff it Ain’t Worth a F***.”, referring to an Elvis Costello video he was also shooting. Comparisons using Google Earth software convincingly confirmed a location which matched the hill seen in the distance behind Kate.
The location is called “Baden’s Clump” near Sidbury Hill, close to the town of Tidworth in Wiltshire. The exact latitude/longitude co-ordinates of where Kate is standing for most of the video is (51.2775278,-1.7398628)
Update & Warning: This location is on UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) lands, and despite being by a public road, there are signs in the area for the public to avoid touching anything (military debris) they see on the ground. See this page here, and watch this safety video. If in any doubt, contact the MOD for advice.
To prove it once and for all, two fans headed out to the area this week to get photographic proof!
Special mention to Richard (photos) and Vron (model) who ventured out to report for fans! Read more at the forum thread here. Here’s the video:
