The first major review is in and it’s very good! Writing in today’s new edition of Uncut Magazine, Erin Osmon reviews the 4 box sets that make up Kate’s Remastered in Vinyl releases. As well as reserving high praise for the included rare tracks on these collections, the reviewer is careful to assess the improvements in the remastered sound of Kate’s classic songs, something we’ve been very curious to hear about…
“The drums on “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” pound with a more robust and exuberant energy, mirroring the heartbeat thump the song still elicits, 33 years after its release. The same goes for the frantic rhythms of “Sat In Your Lap”, which are fuller and more bouyant. The instrumentation of “Wuthering Heights” at last feels in balance with the track’s striking vocals, as if they too were invited to perform from the stage, rather than projecting towards the singer from the pit.
The layered likes of “Babooshka” feel more natural too, with evident care paid to the very bucolic potential of these recordings, even the ones heavily adorned in synthesisers and effects.”
“Pretty much every Bush tune you might possibly want to find is at last lined up and easy to navigate, and that the woman herself ostensibly chose the songs and sequence makes it that much more alluring. Despite its pedestrian title, Remastered In Vinyl is exceptional in its completeness.” 8/10
Kate, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Bob Marley, Alicia Keys and more are some of the artists taking part in a new UNICEF vinyl project. As this year’s Winter themed 2018 Kate Bush Party in the Royal Vauxhall Tavern in London approaches on November 23rd, Seán chats to Homeground co-founder Dave Cross about the amazing history of fan conventions and parties that himself, Peter, Krys, Lisa Bradley and Kate herself have organised since the 1980s!
Lots of memories of how Kate and her family got involved in these increasingly ambitious events, some RARE audio from the unforgettable 1990 Convention (yes, famously she announced potential live dates….they only took 24 years to arrive!) and we also manage to find time to discuss this month’s upcoming remasters. Thanks Dave! Party tickets here: https://tinyurl.com/yb4tmms7 (with apologies for Mrs Bartolozzi’s washing machine spinning in the background of this episode!)

No, Seán can’t believe it either: in this episode of the Kate Bush Fan Podcast he catches up with Del Palmer(!) and singer Mandy Watson and pianist/arranger Michael Mayell of The Kate Bush Song Book as they perform in Ireland together for the very first time. This relaxed chat finds us sitting around a kitchen table in Dublin discussing how Del became involved with the band, how he experienced re-visiting Kate Bush songs he hasn’t performed on in decades, and his memories of trips to Ireland with Kate and recording here with the cream of Irish musicians.
We can’t thank Del enough for taking the time to do this. Seán also chats briefly backstage with Nadie Keating and Julia Krajewska, the immensely gifted surprise guest vocalists at the Dublin show! All song clips recorded in Monroe’s, Galway – Oct 20th 2018. Read more about Cloudbusting and the Kate Bush Song Book at their site here and follow Del Palmer at his Facebook page here.

Kate has released a promotional video ad for her upcoming Kate Bush – Remastered project. It features clips from her Experiment IV video (hello Dawn French, Hugh Laurie, Richard Vernon, Del Palmer and our extras pals Peter, Krys and Dave from HomeGround!) and is soundtracked by How To Be Invisible. A mysterious voiceover states:
“Sometimes we find the art of mastering a bit tricky….sometimes we NAIL it!”
John Lynch
Kate sounds very confident about how her catalogue now sounds! The final frame with release dates also now confirms a DIGITAL release of the remastered catalogue, but we still don’t know if that means Hi-definition audio (WAV, or FLAC) downloads. We’ll find out closer to the release date, no doubt. We have all the pre-ordering information for Vinyl and CD, including box sets, here.
Update: Kate has revealed on her official site that the voice on the Remastered ad she directed is Irish actor John Lynch. “We’ve had such a fantastic response to the ad that Kate directed for the Remastered project. A lot of people have asked whose voice it is in the ad and we’d like you to know that it’s the wonderful actor and novelist John Lynch.”
We have fresh English dates over the coming months from The KT Bush Band – which, as you’ll know, features original members Brian Bath and Vic King from Kate’s pre-fame pub band gigs. All ticket links below or check out the band’s site here: http://www.thektbushband.com
In another Bush Telegraph special episode of the Kate Bush Fan Podcast, Darrell and Paul take a trip down memory lane and talk about encounters with the Bush family, including when Kate sung to Paul and Darrell played Moonlight Sonata at the Farm. They also discuss the upcoming Kate Bush – Remastered vinyl and CD project.

Update: 5th October – Kate has posted on her official site about the reaction to the news:
Response to the Remasters…
I just can’t believe the fantastic response to yesterday’s announcement of the Remastered project. I’m totally blown away! It’s really exciting and incredibly rewarding for everyone involved to see it being received so positively.
I really wasn’t expecting such an overwhelming reaction. Thank you.
All best wishes,
Kate

Thanks to the Kate Bush Encyclopedia page for letting us know that Geoff Emerick, who was engineer on one of Kate’s earliest recording sessions in 1975 (The Saxophone Song, The Man With The Child In His Eyes, and the never released track known as “Maybe” or “Humming”) has passed away yesterday. RIP Geoff, our condolences to his family and friends. Geoff was best known for his work on classic album recordings by The Beatles.
Geoff Emerick was the first engineer I ever worked with. He recorded The Man With The Child in His Eyes along with a couple of other tracks at Air Studios in Oxford St in 1974. He was incredibly sweet and supportive – I’d never been in a recording studio before, let alone played live with an orchestra. He joked around with me and put me at ease. He had a brilliant sense of humour and was really quite mischievous. I’ll always remember him with a smile on his face. What a really lovely man he was, an incredibly gifted engineer and one of the truly great heroes of the music business. It was such an honour to work with him. Kate
Last month, the exact location of the first incarnation of Kate’s Wuthering Heights video (the “red dress” version) was unearthed by fans – see our news report here. Now, user Kestrel on our site forum has made contact with the cameraman from that day, Mike Miles. We finally learned the date of the famous shoot (Wednesday 26th of October 1977) and received a very detailed report on what happened – which you can read below. Thanks to Kestrel for sharing!
Kate Bush … ‘Wuthering Heights Promo’ … Salisbury Plain… Wednesday 26th October 1977
From around 1976 to 1982 I worked as a freelance Lighting Cameraman, for Nick Abson’s company, ‘Rockflicks’, making pop promo and concert films with Nick . All the productions we made were shot on 16mm film. (no ‘videos’ in those days). From 3rd October to 5th November 1977, I was working with Nick on the first Stiff Records UK tour .. ‘The Live Stiffs Tour’… featuring Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric and Larry Wallis. We were making a Feature length ‘fly on the wall’ film of the tour… ’If It Ain’t Stiff ..It Ain’t Worth a F…’ We travelled around the UK with the band on their coach, driven of course, by Trevor. I won’t elaborate on the antics that we all got up to during the tour, some of which are in the film. Other than to say, that it was the film crew who were thrown out of the infamous Watford Gap ‘Blue Boar’ motorway service station on the M1, for bad behaviour.
During the tour’s progress to the West and Wales we had a free day. To fill the gap, Nick had arranged to shoot a promo while we were travelling to the next Stiff gig. The promo was for an unknown singer called Kate Bush. The track was called ‘Wuthering Heights’. I remember hearing the track for the first time and thinking Kate was a bit squeaky! Because we had to shoot on the way West (the next gig may have been Cardiff, but not sure), Nick had found a grass field with a stand of trees in the middle of Salisbury Plain, which was convenient for continuing our journey after we had finished.
The night before, we stayed in a hotel in Salisbury, where we met Kate Bush and all had dinner together. I also discovered she grew up in Welling, Kent, which was only about 2 miles from where I grew up. It was probably quite daunting for young Kate, her first promo and in a strange hotel surrounded by an admiring bunch of blokes. She sensibly went to bed early and declined our request for her to join us for a drink in the bar.
Early the next morning we met up with a Grips who had driven down from London in an old white van, carrying an Elemack Spyder Dolly and a whole load of curved track. Once we found the location we had to get the van into the field. It was Autumn and had been raining. The entrance was very muddy, the van was very heavy. After a number of attempts to drive into the field, the van became completely stuck in the mud. We couldn’t unload it and carry the dolly to the location, it was too far and weighed half a ton. The only solution was to find a local farmer with a tractor and get the van towed out of the mud and down to the location. About 2 or 3 hours later, we had found a friendly farmer with a tractor. It was a dull grey morning and the field, although covered in grass, appeared as though it had once been ploughed. It was very uneven and also on a slope. We set up the track in a large semi-circle, checked that it was level, which was quite a feat and placed the dolly and camera in position. The sound play-back equipment, for the recording Kate would mime to, was all set up and tested. We were sort of ready to go.
I couldn’t really do much to enhance the look of the film. I did use a soft, light, diffusion filter, but had to be careful because of possible flaring from the sky. I couldn’t put graduated filters on the lens to control the sky, which was dull, but brighter than everything else, because of the trees and the fairly continuous tracking and camera framing. I didn’t have a light powerful enough to light Kate’s face from a distance and there was no sun to reflect light into her eyes. I did manage to use a hand held reflector for some of the close-ups. We also had a small smoke machine. Unfortunately it was quite windy, so the smoke blew quickly past Kate’s face. While we were assembling all the equipment, Kate had come over to me and said that she had been told that the Cameraman was the person to ask about how she looked! She had lovely long hair and had an artificial flower pinned into it. She asked me if I thought it was a good idea and if it looked all right. At the time it looked pretty good, she also seemed to want to keep it in if she could. I said it looked lovely and should keep it in her hair. Nick couldn’t wait any longer and we went straight into the filming with little rehearsal. We were already running out of time because of the delayed start. We had to get to the Stiff gig later that afternoon.
Once we started filming, Kate soon got into her dance routine and had obviously been working on it for some time. We covered the whole number as many times as possible, tracking back and forth, with occasional stops, filming different frame sizes from very wide to extreme close-up. Kate’s dance moves became pretty energetic. The flower in her hair slowly worked loose and started to flop around a bit. Her hair sometimes became caught up in it. By now it was too late to stop, remove it and start everything all over again. We just didn’t have time. I was feeling bad about my advice regarding the flower. Kate was also becoming tired after all the dancing on a ploughed grassy field. It was getting cold. After numerous takes we had to stop and pack up. Considering the early morning start, the long hold up with the van getting stuck, the difficult terrain for dancing and the dull, cold weather; Kate couldn’t have been more helpful, patient and friendly to everyone. I had got used to her voice and decided I liked it. However I wasn’t so sure if it would be a hit, or if she would become popular. Shows how much I knew. The crew accompanied Kate to Salisbury station and just as she was about to board the train back to London, she gave me a lovely hug and a kiss on the cheek. We were all in love with her by now. We then set off for the rest of the Stiff tour.

Just a tip for you, in case this excellent podcast from Cecilee Linke in the USA has passed you by, I’ve only recently caught it myself! Strange Phenomena – The Music of Kate Bush aims to take every Kate Bush song recorded, in album order, devoting an entire episode to discussing each one in turn and in-depth. An ambitious undertaking to be sure, but Cecilee is already now rounding off her series of episodes on Never For Ever and will surely soon be setting her sights on Sat in Your Lap, The Dreaming and beyond. Chatting with fans and musicians, she leaves no stone unturned as she examines the history of each track, mulls over its meaning, lyrics, musical structure (Cecilee is a musician) and its place in Kate’s oeuvre.
