WIN! A copy of the new edition of “A Book of Dreams” by Peter Reich

A Book of Dreams

‘Cloudbusting’ was inspired by a book that I found in a shop …Written by a guy called Peter Reich, and it’s called A Book of Dreams. And it’s a very unusual, beautiful book, written by this man through the eyes of himself when he was a child, looking at his father, and the very special relationship between them. His father meant so much to him. – Kate Bush

Anyone who attended Kate’s Before the Dawn concerts in London last year will have witnessed the jubilant live performance of Cloudbusting that closed each evening’s show. As most of you will know, this powerful and enduring classic song is inspired by “A Book of Dreams“, written by Peter Reich, about his father, the brilliant but persecuted Austrian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich.

The book has just been republished with a new introduction by Peter Reich, and a still of Kate on the cloudbuster adorning the cover. It has been out of print and very difficult to obtain for over twenty years.

Thanks to the nice people at John Blake Publishing we have 5 copies to giveaway! To be in with a chance of winning a copy all you have to do is answer the following question:

Who played Wilhelm Reich in the video for Cloudbusting?

Please send your answer to bookofdreams@katebushnews.com – if you are successful I will then be in touch by email to get your details for getting the book to you. The competition runs till the end of Wednesday March 11th at which point the random draw will be made. Good luck! p.s. if you can’t wait, the book is available from Amazon here.

The Red Shoes gets vinyl reissue in April

thered-480x480

Kate‘s 1993 album The Red Shoes will finally be reissued on 180g vinyl LP in April.

From the superdeluxeedition site: The album was Kate’s seventh studio long-player and yielded four top 30 UK hits, including lead single Rubberband Girl, And So Is Love and Moments of Pleasure. The record features a wide array of guests including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Gary Brooker and Prince (not forgetting Lenny Henry).

Once promotional duties were over in 1994, Kate took an extended break, had her son Bertie, and didn’t return with another album until 2005, with the acclaimed Aerial (also sorely in need of a vinyl reissue, judging by the ridiculous prices the lone 2005 pressing is commanding).

The Red Shoes is being reissued on a new audiophile label called Analog Spark – an imprint of Razor & Tie. Analog Spark will focus “on the reissue of classic and acclaimed albums on 180-gram vinyl and SACD”.

Kate’s album has been out-of-print on vinyl for decades and commands massive prices on the used market. This title will therefore be very welcome indeed and will be only the second release on Analog Spark (after The Sound Of Music soundtrack). The new vinyl reissue was cut from “the original analog tapes” by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and is being pressed at RTI.

Remarkably, The Red Shoes is actually only one of two KB albums that has ever been remastered (Hounds of Love being the other). It was included on CD as part of the three-disc Director’s Cut deluxe edition in 2011. Kate was quite open about not particularly liking the digital sound of the original record, so until more information is forthcoming, we will assume that this new 180g LP is being mastered from the same analogue source as Kate used for the CD remaster.

The Red Shoes 180g vinyl reissue will be issued in April. Watch the Analog Spark site for updates.

Our incredible 2014 in one photograph

Here it is. The moment. 26th August 2014. Kate owns the world musical stage. Vibrant, new, unpredictable, music history, gob-smacking, unexpected, beautiful, magnificent, pure Kate. We were floored. So were you. Thanks for supporting the site and the HomeGround anthologies in 2014. Here is our picture of the year. There are no other words for what she (and Bertie) achieved.

Kate at Hammersmith

Kate pays tribute to her monitor engineer, Ian Newton

In a Christmas message on her official site, Kate pays tribute to Ian Newton, her gifted monitor engineer who has very sadly passed away in the last week.

From Kate…

I want to wish you all a wonderful Christmas. Thank you for having made this year such a special one. Your incredible support and encouragement throughout the shows made them something really special that I will never forget.

It is so terribly sad that Ian Newton, our monitor engineer, died suddenly just a couple of days ago on 19th December. We are all so shocked by the news and send our deepest sympathies to his family. He was a complete sweetheart, a gentle man and an incredibly important part of the sound team right from the very beginning of the live project even before the first rehearsals. Then through to the tech rehearsals and on to the actual shows at Hammersmith.

It was Ian who encouraged me to use the in-ears system and oversaw the whole process using his huge experience in live work. He encouraged the whole band and Chorus to use in-ears so that all of us were using the same system for all the shows. Many people commented on the high quality of the sound and sound system at the venue and a great deal of this was because of Ian.

He was personally very supportive to me. There were quite a lot of things I was nervous about especially as I hadn’t sung or played live for such a long time. Ian loved his work and really cared about quality and detail, and spent a lot of time making sure that my monitors had exactly the right mix for every track, as he did with every member of the band and chorus. This meant that we could all work as confidently as possible with each other and in the context of the venue at Hammersmith. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him. He wanted it to be the best it could possibly be.

We’re all going to really miss him. All of the team but especially the sound team, the band, the singers and of course me too. It’s hard to take in that he’s no longer with us. It’s a real loss for the live music industry. He was only 52. He was a lovely, warm, generous-spirited man with a lovely sense of humour. Thank you Ian for being such an invaluable part of the team, for being so dependable and for being there for me and helping me have the confidence to get up there and perform live. I’ll always remember you sitting there, behind the monitor desk with your lovely big warm smile.

With love and best wishes for the new year ahead, Kate x

Kate receives Evening Standard Theatre Award!

Kate has received the Editors Award at tonight’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards at a glittering ceremony in the Palladium, London. The awards, now in their 60th year, are presented annually for outstanding achievements in London theatre, and were hosted tonight by comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. Kate was presented with her award by Sir Ian McKellen. The Before the Dawn shows at the Eventim Apollo, which ended last month, won the Editors Prize for achieving “a new high in music performance.”

“It was just an incredible experience,” she said in her acceptance speech, crediting both the encouragement of her son, Bertie, and the enthusiasm of London audiences. “You hope that the audience will like what you’re doing, but my God – every night these people were there, driving us on and filling us with energy! Thank you to everybody who came to the shows and made it feel like it was something special.”

A special mention also for KT Fellowship member Mark Henderson, Kate’s lighting designer, who was deservedly nominated but lost out in the Best Design category for Before the Dawn. Tom Hiddleston was awarded Best Actor for Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse and Gillian Anderson picked up the Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress for her performance in the Young Vic production of A Streetcar Named Desire. More at the Whats On Stage site here. The awards will be televised tomorrow night (Monday 1st December) on the London Live channel (Sky Channel 117) Freeview (8), Virgin (159) at 8pm. UK viewers can also watch it on the channel’s website.

Congratulations Kate, richly deserved!

Amazon 5 star reviews

Kate Bush ISBN 1861714432 Vol 1 Paperback Cover“For a Kate Bush fan there was nothing more satisfying, other than perhaps Kate herself dropping around for a quick cup of tea, than the arrival of a much awaited issue of HomeGround. Just as the illusion of being the one and only devotee reaches overwhelming heights a surprise package is delivered as a joyous reminder of Kate Bush’s hold over, not just me, but many of us.”

… so Emmy Award winning actor Guy Pearce introduces HomeGround: The Kate Bush Magazine Anthology 1982-2012, a project we have worked on for over five years, and which we are delighted to say, is now available to order.

The first issue of HomeGround appeared in 1982, four years after Kate Bush’s dramatic debut with Wuthering Heights. Starting with an ancient manual typewriter, real scissors and a pot of genuine paste, we mounted articles on recycled backing sheets and added hand-drawn artwork to fill the gaps. The first issue was photocopied, the pages hand-stapled together and twenty-five copies were given away to fans we knew. Only later did we discover the magic of word processing, and then desktop publishing.

From those beginnings HomeGround became a cornerstone of the ‘Kate-speaking world’, going on to co-organise with the official fan club four fan conventions and events at which Kate Bush and members of her family and band appeared; arrange at her request a team of fans to be extras in two of her videos, and organise annual informal fan gatherings on Glastonbury Tor, and at Top Withens, the storm-blown ruin on Haworth Moor thought to be the place which inspired the creation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. Years before the internet, HomeGround became a place where fans could discuss Kate’s music, and a place where they could publish creative writing and artwork inspired by that music.

Kate Bush ISBN 1861714440 Vol 2 Paperback CoverBuilt around the thread of HomeGround’s retracing of the scenes of Kate’s musical career, these unique books include material from over 400 HomeGround contributors from the thirty-year existence of the magazine, and include material inspired by all periods of Kate’s musical progression.

This is a two-volume set published both in hardcover and paperback. Volume 1 covers Kate’s career from the late 1970s to the late 1980s – from before Wuthering Heights to The Sensual World and the box set set This Woman’s Work. Volume 2 covers Kate’s career from the 1990s to date – from The Red Shoes to 2011’s  50 Words for Snow. Both volumes include a detailed Kate timeline and discography and a “who’s who” of people involved in the story.

These volumes also contain a definitive collection of the beautiful Kate-related artwork from professional artists Paulina Stuckey-Cassidy and Steven Brown, the riotous Cosmic Kate graphic stories of Chris Tilley, the Kate-related extemporary photography of Rob Assenberg, Paul Camilleri, and Jules Angel and the work of published poets John Carder Bush, Collin Kelley, Kyla Clay-Fox, Antonello Saeli, and Jeff Side.

Kate reflects on “one of the most extraordinary experiences” of her life!

Kate on stagePhotographed by Ken McKay

Kate has posted a note, entitled “After the Dawn” on her official site. So many people wanted to read what Kate had to say after her triumphant run of live shows, that her site momentarily crashed!

After the Dawn

Hi there,

Now all the shows are over, it’s pretty difficult to explain how I feel about it all. It was quite a surreal journey that kept its level of intensity right from the early stages to the end of the very last show. It was also such great fun.

It was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. I loved the whole process. Particularly putting the band, the Chorus and the team together and watching it all evolve. It really was the ultimate combination of talent and artists, both from the music business and the theatre world. I never expected everyone in the team to be so lovely and we all grew very close. We became a family and I really miss them all terribly.

I was really delighted that the shows were received so positively and so warmly but the really unexpected part of it all was the audiences. Audiences that you could only ever dream of. One of the main reasons for wanting to perform live again was to have contact with that audience. They took my breath away. Every single night they were so behind us. You could feel their support from the minute we walked on stage. I just never imagined it would be possible to connect with an audience on such a powerful and intimate level; to feel such, well quite frankly, love. It was like this at every single show.

Thank you so very much to everyone who came to the shows and became part of that shared experience. It was a truly special and wonderful feeling for all of us.

Very best wishes,
Kate x

Sunday Times Magazine interviews John Carder Bush

Sunday Times ad

Tomorrow’s edition of the Sunday Times Magazine in the UK and Ireland will feature an interview with Kate’s brother, John. This is to coincide with the publication on November 20th of a new edition of his iconic book of photographs of Kate as a child, ‘Cathy’. The book can be pre-ordered as a limited signature edition here, or on Amazon here (it is also available from all major booksellers).

First published as a run of just 500 copies in 1986, Cathy is a collection of photographs by John of Kate as a young girl, with accompanying text. This new edition – the first printing since the original edition – includes a new introduction by John Carder Bush, illustrated with eight previously unpublished photographs.

A beautifully bound hardback with a linen cover, head and tail bands and a matching linen slipcase, Cathy is comprised of twenty-eight cut out pages featuring the text, with full-page photographs revealed on a separate page beneath. The design matches the original limited run in layout, including the original introduction as well. (With thanks to Isabelle for posting the magazine ad)

Kate warmly congratulated in special Music Week ads

Music Week 13th Oct 2014In this week’s edition of the UK music industry magazine, Music Week, two specially placed advertisements are prominently featured. One, a full page ad from the Eventim Apollo venue itself, applauds Kate’s success at selling out 22 shows. Another two-page spread has been placed in the issue by the concert promoters SJM, and it highlights some of the sensational reviews Kate’s Before the Dawn shows gathered while they ran.

You can click on each image for a larger version of both scans. More about Music Week (subscription info etc) can be found at its website here.
