Paddy Bush exhibition in Cavan, Ireland!

Paddy BushThis is fantastic. We’ve been following the travels and music of Kate’s brother Paddy since we started this site and this summer it is all being brought together in a unique exhibition called The Road to Marovany – The Art and Craft of Paddy Bush which takes place from August 13th till September 10th at the Bluewall Gallery, Co. Cavan, Ireland. Paddy tells me that the exhibition gallery is in a lakeland setting about 10 kms from Cavan town and will be full of photos and a lot of musical instruments including the ones that he has played on Kate’s music. The show mainly focuses on music and photography from Madagascar with many photos Paddy took during the trip he recently organised for BBC Radio3. Paddy’s work with glass will be on display and he’ll be giving a talk and demonstration on Wednesday 17th August at 3pm. More details at the gallery website here. (I’ve also just realised that with the release of Director’s Cut this year, Paddy is now the only musician, apart from Kate, to have performed on every single one of her studio albums!)

The Road to Marovany - The Art and Craft of Paddy BushFrom the exhibition publicity: “Marovany is not a place but the name of a musical instrument from the island of Madagascar. The road to Marovany is a biographic musical journey that follows Paddy Bush in his search for a musical instrument that is as controversial as it is endangered.
Starting in the 1970’s as a student of musical instrument technology when he first heard the music of Madagascar from the ethnomusicologist Jean Jenkins, through his recording career with his sister Kate Bush, from the pyramid of Glastonbury to the lakelands of County Cavan and eventually to the mysterious world of Madagascar’s music and magic. A unique exhibition of photographs, musical instruments and lampworked glass.”

Happy Birthday Kate Bush: Five Reasons Why She Isn’t Bigger In America

“Although hailed in her homeland as one of the most distinctive and inventive British artists of the past 30 years, appreciation for Kate Bush has been sadly elusive here in the States. Born 53 years ago today, Bush’s American following has been limited to a small core of devotees, suggesting tshe’s either simply ignored or shuffled below the radar. And yet, anyone who’s heard her many masterpieces – including her extraordinary albums Never For Ever, The Dreaming, and Hounds of Love, as well as her remarkable singles “Wuthering Heights,” “The Man with the Child in His Eyes,” “Running Up That Hill” and “Don’t Give Up” (which she sang with Peter Gabriel) — can attest to her ability to bend pop boundaries and forge a new kind of sound that’s extraordinarily imaginative and irresistibly seductive all in the same score ….”

HomeGround book and mag latest

Homeground logo

The completed sections of the HomeGround Anthology have now been sent to the publisher. These take the story to 2006 and at present comprise 1132 pages. We will now be in discussion as to how this material is presented and whether there will be two volumes.

We are now working on the two final sections of the book. The first bridges the gap between Aerial and Directors Cut, and the final section which will cover Directors Cut and anything else which happens this year. These will use material which appeared in HomeGround issue 78, and material which will be in issue 79.

We are now beginning to put together issue 79 and welcome any letters or contributions, especially regarding Directors Cut, and any ads or personal messages. As ever it’s already looking like our problem will be what to leave out!

Writer Aimee Bender on ‘A Coral Room’

Coral

Writer Aimee Bender was asked by Granta Magazine to choose five songs or pieces of music which are important to her, and which bring back particularly salient memories. Her fifth choice was Kate’s ‘A Coral Room’ from Aerial. From Granta Online:

Aimee Bender

“Well. I remembered this last night at one a.m, lying in bed, thinking of the assignment, going over CDs in my mind. It is the most profound song about memory and loss, and how memory works, and the way it sweeps over us, and how elusive it is, that I’ve ever heard. As with many of her songs, only after multiple listenings did it kick in for me. It’s an elegy to her mother, but with the first line – ‘there is a city, draped in net’ – it feels like she is trying to actually articulate the process of living at once in memory and the present, and how the two collide. It is really, really, not fun pub music at all! but it is a masterpiece of a song. The city, and the spider – they are first characters in a dream world, in the land of symbols, of myth, but then later they change, they become firm and strong, grounded with specific items, in a moment, in a life, and with that move, we are hammered down by the finality of loss. Kate Bush has many unbelievable songs, but this, one of her most recent, is as good as any that came before.”

Slug Magazine: detailed review of Director’s Cut

Director's Cut inner sleeve artwork

This is a good read. From Dean O’Hillis in SLUG Magazine (Salt Lake Underground) another very positive review of Director’s Cut. The most detailed of the recent North American reviews that we’ve seen. Read it here. (Thanks to Jon West)

UPDATE: Collin Kelley has reminded us of his own detailed review of Director’s Cut, published at Soldout, which you can also read here, thanks Collin.

Australian newspaper article – possible new album news?

The Sydney Star Observer has ran an interview with the company chair of EMI Music Australia, Mark Poston. Towards the end of the piece, it is mentioned that Poston anticipates a new Kate Bush album in the second half of 2011. From the article:

“Of course, you can never be sure with Kate Bush. She does things at her own pace,” Poston said with more than a little understatement. “But we’ve been told to prepare for a November release.”

The full article is here. This could of course be the most fantastic news of the year, a brand new album so soon after Director’s Cut, but please remember this is not an official statement and over the years we have had many false starts and dates and EMI in London have told us they have no Kate news at the moment. Rumours are only that until Kate and/or EMI makes an announcement, which of course we will bring as soon as we can.

Unofficial Kate Bush DVD – a quick note

We’ve been receiving a few emails from people who have purchased the 100% unofficial DVD released recently, called “Kate Bush: A Life of Surprises”. Basically those contacting us want to let fans know that if you have already previously purchased the two unofficial DVDs from the same company, called “Kate Bush: Under Review” (2006) and “Hounds of Love: Under Review” (2009), this 2 x DVD set is a re-package of those two discs. Just in case you weren’t aware.

Q&A with Kate in the current Classic Rock magazine

Classic Rock magazineThe current edition of Classic Rock magazine has a Q&A with Kate. The magazine describes this interview as follows: “The first lady of art-rock on resurrecting the past, reclusiveness and the royal family.”

Apparently Kate mentions that she is using old equipment to make her next album, aka KB10 (and now also affectionately known to fans as ‘Bonemeal’ due to Kate’s recent interview with Mark Radcliffe in which she praised the song-enhancing properties of leaving a bag of bonemeal sitting on her piano!).

Kate says: “I’m using the most archaic gear I could get my hands on. I’m working with analogue tape and old bits of valve equipment, a lot of that old stuff has a great sound.”

The issue is in the shops now.

RIP Gow Hunter 1960-2011

Gow Hunter

Sad news this evening. The striking-looking actor and dancer featured in Kate’s 1986 video for her Hounds of Love single, Gow Hunter, has passed away yesterday at the age of just 51. A choreographer and dancer,  Gow had been living in Tokyo since 2007 and recently published several photography books.

UPDATE 2012: Kate posted on her official site about Gow and details of a charity sponsored walk in his memory:

Sponsored Walk – In Gow Hunter’s Memory – Earlier this month Karen Stripp took part in a sponsored walk to raise money for the Hampstead Marie Curie Hospice in memory of Gow Hunter. Although Karen has now completed the walk she is still accepting donations on her Just Giving Page available here. All proceeds will be donated to the Marie Curie Cancer Charity. In light of such a worthy cause and in memory of such a wonderful person Kate also wanted to add…

I’m so very sad to hear the news about Gow. He was a lovely man and such fun to work with as the male star in the video for “Hounds Of Love”. He really had the face of a great film star. He was just brilliant. Congratulations to Karen on the success of her walk and wishing her every success in raising funds. It’s such a lovely thing to do. Best wishes, Kate

Kate Bush 2012

From his official biography: “Trained in classical ballet Gow danced with various ballet companies and continued with diverse and challenging work in Television, Video, Film, Theatre and Opera. He has been very fortunate to live and work in many different countries….Paris, Rome, Geneva, Seoul, London to name a few and work with very talented performers/directors such as Kate Bush, Placido Domingo, David Bailey and Robert Lepage. After a successful career as a professional dancer Gow was accepted into Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design where he completed a B.A (Hons) degree in Textile Design. His designs have been seen on the catwalks of London Fashion week, solo exhibitions and his own label of knitted textile accessories. Gow has always had a passion for anything creative and photography has always been one of his most inspiring pastimes. Gow lives in Tokyo since 2007 and spends much of his time taking pictures of Japan and is beginning to fulfill his lifetime passion of photography.”

Sending our sincere thoughts and condolences to his loved ones.

In the video below, you can enjoy again Gow’s beautiful performance as the wrongly accused man in Kate’s Hitchcock-inspired promotional film for Hounds of Love. It is hard to imagine anyone more perfect in this role. Stunning.

Catch-up #4 Spin magazine gives Director’s Cut 9/10!

Spin magazine in the US has given Kate’s new album a glowing review and 9 out of 10 stars. We particularly love this summing up: “…the lustiest record in this ever-bodacious cougar’s canon.” We hope Spin is looking forward to this ever-bodacious cougar’s next album as much as we are! Read the full review here. (thanks to Ross Drucker)

Catch-up #3 Paddy Bush plays on new Colin Lloyd Tucker album!

Colin Lloyd Tucker - new album Inner NutshellExcited about this as a) we haven’t heard much musically from Paddy for a bit, and b) Colin is rather excellent! Paddy is guesting on Colin Lloyd Tucker’s new album, ‘Inner Nutshell‘, more than two years in the making. The album is out now! Hear the album and read more about Colin here. For any ‘newbies’ Colin and Paddy collaborated as ‘Bushtucker’ many moons ago on the album Skyscraping. Catch-up #1 Kate talks to Interview Magazine!

Kate and kitty

Hello! We’re back to the land of KB updates after our two week hangover from The Sensual Walk! We’ve missed out on telling you about a few happenings so here’s the first of several catch up posts!

Kate has been interviewed by Interview Magazine as part of the North American promotional push for Director’s Cut. As well as talking about the album, Kate recalls the influence of her late father, Dr Robert Bush: “My father was always playing the piano. He played all kinds of music—Gershwin, all kinds of stuff. He was really a hugely encouraging force to me when I was little. I used to write loads of songs when I was really young, and he was always there to listen to them for me. And it was a really wonderful thing that he did because he made me feel that they had some worth, even when they didn’t really. And he was always very honest with me. He’d say if he didn’t think perhaps one song was that good, or he liked that one. What was great was that he’d give me that time, and would always come and listen when we’d written something. So, you know, he was fantastic because he gave me the sense that he believed in me.”

Find out what Kate thinks of Ricky Gervais, Lady Gaga and more, the full interview is here!
